Greenwood Celebrates Autumn with Community Engagement and Honors Local Leaders

Greenwood Gears Up for Fall with Community Engagement and Recognitions

The charming town of Greenwood, known for its close-knit community and lively local events, experienced a delightful autumn event on October 16. Sunshine interspersed with clouds set the perfect backdrop for a series of heartwarming activities and community celebrations. Families from all over gathered at St. Mark United Methodist Church for the annual fall seasonal pumpkin patch visit—a beloved tradition for many. With temperatures reaching a lovely 72°F with gentle winds from the ENE at 5 to 10 mph, the day was perfect for outdoor fun.

A Special Harvest Visit

Among the visitors were Siserly Kelley, a dedicated parent educator with Carolina Health Centers, alongside toddler Chailen Adams and his mother, Shel’sea Williams. Kelley, engaging the little one in playful learning activities, had Chailen explore pumpkins of different sizes and textures. Not only was this an enjoyable experience for the toddler, but it was also an educational one. “It’s amazing to see growth year by year,” Kelley shared enthusiastically, noting Chailen’s developmental progress such as potty training and fine-motor skill improvement using child safety scissors.

Celebrating Emerging Leaders

This month has been particularly significant for Kelley as she was recognized as a member of the 2024 class of Greenwood Under 40 Stars, an honor celebrating young community leaders. Kelley, who effortlessly juggles her roles as a parent educator, birth doula, and mother, said, “I am honored to be recognized alongside my dear friend and fellow honoree, Helena Wardlaw.” The award acknowledges the dedication of individuals like Kelley in providing invaluable support to parents and children during early developmental stages.

Making a Difference Every Day

With a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Lander University and a master’s in business management from Webster University, Kelley brings a rich academic background and personal dedication to her role. Her career at Carolina Health Centers, where she initially joined as an administrative assistant, has transformed through years of commitment and growth. Becoming a parent educator at 28, she cherishes moments when her efforts truly make a difference in someone’s life.

Through partnerships with organizations like the Greenwood County Public Library System and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Kelley ensures parents and young children have access to essential resources. “You can sign your children up for free books as soon as they are born,” Kelley points out, emphasizing her passion for promoting early literacy.

Empowering Parents and Children

In her role, Kelley regularly sets goals with the families she assists, offering support in everything from early childhood educational needs to accessing necessary community resources via the Resource Hub of United Way of the Lakelands. For parents like Shel’sea Williams, this support has been invaluable. “Kelley helps me keep up with everything Chailen needs,” Williams noted, appreciating Kelley’s continuous guidance through the developmental milestones.

A driven advocate and supporter of young families, Kelley continues to deepen her expertise—having recently become certified as a birth doula—and envisions becoming a lactation consultant. Her commitment stems from a desire to help all mothers, regardless of background, to have empowered birthing experiences.

Greenwood’s Community Spirit

The spirit of Greenwood is indeed vibrant, with local leaders like Kelley and her friend Helena Wardlaw driving positive change in their community. As autumn days give way to the cooler airs, the sense of unity and empowerment continues to grow, making Greenwood a wonderful place to watch young families thrive.
