Greenwood City Gears Up for Competitive Local Elections

Greenwood City Gears Up for Competitive Local Elections

Greenwood residents will soon be heading to the polls with an array of candidates vying for important local government positions. Eight candidates have filed to run for nonpartisan positions in the upcoming November election, according to state records. The filing period for these races closed Thursday, showcasing a mix of new faces and returning officials.

This year’s election cycle features several hotly contested seats on the Greenwood City Council. Notably, Incumbent Ward One Councilwoman Niki Hutto is seeking reelection and will be challenged by DeWannda Dee Sayles. Voters in Ward One will thus have a significant choice to make as they decide between experience and potential change.

The Ward Three seat has been left open following incumbent Councilwoman Betty Boles‘ decision not to run for another term. This has attracted three contenders: Brandon Best, Annette Edwards, and Glenn Williams. Each brings unique qualifications and experiences to the table:

  • Brandon Best previously ran for the state Senate 10 seat in the Democratic primary but lost to Francie Kleckley.
  • Annette Edwards has made two attempts to become the mayor of Greenwood, losing both times to Brandon Smith.
  • Glenn Williams is a forestry consultant, real estate broker, and a licensed residential builder.

Meanwhile, Incumbent Ward Five Councilman Matthew Miller has filed for reelection without any challengers, leaving him in a strong position to retain his seat. Voters in Ward Five will have a more straightforward choice at the polls this November.

In a notable race for the Greenwood Commissioners of Public Works, Stephen Gilbert, the current Executive Director of Greenwood Community Theatre, hopes to transition from his appointed position to a fully elected role. Gilbert was appointed last year to fill the unexpired term of Mike Monaghan. He will be facing off against Craig Stuckey, a dedicated member of community initiatives such as Keep Greenwood County Beautiful and Preserving Lake Greenwood.

What’s Next?

The general election is scheduled for November 5. On that day, voters will have the final say in deciding who will represent them on the City Council and other local bodies. Each candidate has their own vision and platform, promising to make this election a vital one for the future of Greenwood.

Weather Update

In other news, Greenwood residents can expect cloudy skies this morning, transitioning to partly cloudy conditions this afternoon. While a stray shower or thunderstorm is possible, the high temperature is expected to reach 92°F. Winds will be blowing from the WSW at 10 to 15 mph.

Later in the day, the skies are forecasted to clear up, with temperatures dropping to around 67°F. Winds will shift to WNW and will blow at 5 to 10 mph.
