Greenwood Capital has a rich history that traces back to the 1960s when it served as the in-house pension fund manager for Greenwood Mills. In 1983, the investment division branched out, offering its services to the public. Within the first decade, it attracted new clients and expanded its portfolio remarkably. Greenwood Capital was instrumental in restoring the Greenwood County Electric Capital Fund after it suffered a $3 million loss from risky mortgage-backed securities.
By the late 1990s, the firm’s assets under management (AUM) had amassed to $500 million, affirming its status not only in South Carolina but across the nation. Amidst a time when investment firms were concentrated in financial hubs like New York City, the Greenwood-based team was breaking barriers by representing at industry leader conferences and serving as an information source to news publications.
By 2014, Greenwood Capital’s AUM had surpassed a remarkable $1 billion. The investment and wealth teams became regular guests and reliable financial experts on international broadcast media platforms such as BBC, Bloomberg, CNBC, Fox News, NPR, and CNN.
In addition to their financial success and national recognition, Greenwood Capital expanded its physical premises by opening a second office in downtown Greenville in 2017.
