Greenwood, SC — The upcoming November elections in Greenwood are heating up as eight candidates have filed to run for various nonpartisan races by the filing deadline this past Thursday, according to state records.
Several Greenwood City Council races have seen keen interest, with multiple candidates vying for seats. For the Ward One Council seat, incumbent Councilwoman Niki Hutto has filed to run for reelection. She will be challenged by DeWannda Dee Sayles, who is stepping up to contest the seat.
The Ward Three Council seat is open this election, following the announcement by incumbent Councilwoman Betty Boles that she would not seek reelection. This open seat has seen a flurry of interest, with three candidates entering the fray: Brandon Best, Annette Edwards, and Glenn Williams.
Best had previously run for the State Senate 10 seat in the Democratic primary, but he was unsuccessful against Francie Kleckley. Edwards, in the past, has twice run for the position of Greenwood Mayor, both times coming up short against Brandon Smith. Williams brings a diverse background to the race as a forestry consultant, real estate broker, and a licensed residential builder.
In Ward Five, incumbent Councilman Matthew Miller has chosen to seek another term. Interestingly, no other candidates have filed to run against Miller, making his pursuit of reelection uncontested.
Another notable race is for the Greenwood Commissioners of Public Works. Stephen Gilbert, who currently holds the position after being appointed last year to fill the unexpired term of Mike Monaghan, is seeking a full term. Gilbert, who also serves as the Executive Director of the Greenwood Community Theatre, will face off against Craig Stuckey. Stuckey is known in the community for his active involvement with Keep Greenwood County Beautiful and his efforts in Preserving Lake Greenwood.
The General Election is set for November 5, 2024, giving voters the chance to decide on these important races. Community interest is clearly high, with competitive races in several wards and an open seat drawing multiple contenders.
For residents planning to campaign or attend election events, the weather today is expected to be pleasant. There will be sunshine to start, followed by a few afternoon clouds. The high will reach around 89°F with light and variable winds. Tonight, a few clouds will linger, and the temperature will drop to a low of 68°F. Again, the winds will remain light and variable.
The weather update is accurate as of 6:10 am on August 19, 2024. Greenwood residents can look forward to starting their week with mild weather as they engage with the candidates and participate in the democratic process.
