Greenwood Achieves Economic Milestone with $953 Million in Investments and 742 New Jobs

Greenwood Welcomes a Bright Future with Economic Growth

Greenwood, SC — It’s another sunny day here in Greenwood, with the sky clear and temperatures expected to reach up to 93°F. As we enjoy this warm weather, let’s dive into some uplifting news from our local community.

Since taking on the role of Greenwood County economic development director in 2020, James Bateman and his team have been on quite a journey. Under his leadership, they’ve managed to secure an impressive $953 million in capital investments. But that’s not all; these investments have also paved the way for the creation of 742 new jobs in the community.

When James Bateman, 37, learned he was named a Greenwood Under 40 Star, he couldn’t help but feel a bit taken aback. “It’s appreciated, but it’s unusual, because economic developers always put the companies first,” Bateman shared with a smile. “I’m supposed to talk for a living, I sell people on Greenwood. I’m better at that than I am selling myself.”

Bateman started his career in economic development at the South Carolina Department of Commerce in Columbia, working in the Small Business Division for two and a half years. “That’s what I’m passionate about, where my passion lies. Being able to facilitate the connections and the collaboration that bring these projects to fruition over multiple years. There’s a lot of gratification in seeing these projects come to life after five, six, seven years,” he said.

A Journey of Dedication

In June 2014, a new position opened up in Greenwood County. Bateman drove 68 miles back and forth for seven months before moving to Greenwood in December 2014. “An opportunity came open to join Greenwood and go to the local level and be a business developer, essentially a project manager. So that was more on the recruitment side, which is where I wanted to be,” Bateman recollected.

Building a Stronger Community

Fast forward to August 2020, Bateman stepped into his new role as Greenwood County’s economic development director. “I was hired to start the county’s economic development department. So my vision was to provide the same high-quality customer service, build relationships, and continue to foster relationships that allowed me to be successful in my years past, but do that for the county,” he explained.

Since then, Bateman and his team have been instrumental in attracting more than $953 million in investments in renewable energy and manufacturing for the county. This has brought about 742 new jobs in manufacturing and distribution, with a notable 300 positions at E.A. Sween in Hodges.

Recognition and Gratitude

“I’m really Greenwood’s liaison to the state and to the world. When companies, foreign or domestic, are looking for their next location, they’re talking to me about Greenwood,” Bateman stated proudly. He also noted the significant responsibility and privilege of being the voice representing Greenwood to these companies.

Though he’s used to working behind the scenes, Bateman expressed immense gratitude for the recognition he and his team have received. “It’s a great honor, because I’m used to staying out of the spotlight, spotlighting those companies and getting my gratification out of those personal relationships. So it’s nice for it to come from the Chamber and (Connect) Young Professionals to recognize the work that we’re doing,” he concluded.

As Greenwood basks in today’s sunshine, it’s clear the prospects for this county are just as bright, thanks to the dedication and hard work of individuals like James Bateman and his team.
