As severe cold weather approaches Greenwood, school districts including Greenwood Districts 50, 51, and 52 have announced E-Learning Days to ensure student safety. Students will complete assignments from home, utilizing Chromebooks or educational packets. Piedmont Technical College will also transition to virtual operations. This measures aim to protect students from extreme temperatures, as frostbite risk increases and travel conditions become unsafe.
Residents of Greenwood may want to prepare for an unusual school week as a severe cold snap makes its way through the area! On January 22, 2025, several school districts are making significant changes to their schedules in response to predictions of dangerously low temperatures and an icy forecast. With thermometers suggesting a high of just 34°F and a biting low of 17°F, it’s no surprise that schools like Greenwood School Districts 50, 51, and 52, as well as the Abbeville County School District, have opted for an E-Learning day.
Students attending these districts will be able to complete their assignments from the warmth of home, using either Chromebooks or educational packets provided by their teachers. And for those who might have questions or need help, teachers will be just an email away during regular school hours to assist students with their online learning activities.
Adding to this educational shift, the Palmetto Christian Academy in Greenwood will also have a day off from classes with similar remote learning expectations. This allows families to stay snug indoors while still keeping up with their schoolwork – a perfect arrangement during this chilly weather!
Meanwhile, Piedmont Technical College has announced it will transition to virtual operations starting on January 21, at 2 p.m. All classes after this time will be held virtually. On January 22, the college will open on a delayed schedule, with a start time of 10 a.m.. Students can expect to attend classes from the comfort of their homes, avoiding the need to venture out into the cold.
Lander University is also taking precautions by canceling all classes starting January 21 at 3:30 p.m. They will resume class activities on January 22 at 10 a.m. Essential services such as residence halls, dining, safety, and health services will remain operational for on-campus students, ensuring that those who live on campus continue to have access to vital amenities during this bitter weather.
As we brace ourselves for the forecasted conditions, First Alerts have been issued to notify everyone of the extreme cold expected in the area. Predictions indicate that temperatures may dip low enough to create **treacherous travel conditions** – especially concerning for students making their way to school or buses. Frostbite can occur in less than 10 minutes with the current forecasts, making it crucial for students and families to stay indoors and safe.
It’s not just Greenwood feeling the chill! Numerous schools across central Indiana, as well as Hart County Schools in Georgia, will also be closing their doors in response to the extreme cold. Further down south, schools in North Carolina, including Jackson and Macon Counties, will operate on a two-hour delay, while Union County and Transylvania County schools have also opted for E-Learning Days on January 22.
