Scene of a dog attack incident in Greenwood County.

News Summary

A man is in critical condition following a dog attack in Greenwood County on March 19. Local authorities responded after several dogs charged into a roadway and attacked a victim. The owners of the dogs have been reported to face misdemeanor charges as the investigation continues. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership.

Shocking Dog Attack Leaves Man in Critical Condition in Greenwood County

In a startling incident that has left a community shaken, a man was severely injured in a dog attack in Greenwood County on the evening of March 19. The attack, which took place around 4:30 p.m. at a residence on Old Highway 246 South, has led to the involvement of local authorities who were forced to take immediate action to ensure public safety.

Dog Owners Report Incident

When reports of a dog bite came in, deputies from the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office quickly rushed to the scene. Upon their arrival, they discovered the victim in dire condition. Emergency Medical Services promptly transported him to a nearby hospital, but due to the gravity of his injuries, he was later airlifted to Augusta for more specialized treatment.

The owners of the dogs involved in this harrowing incident, identified as Laquavious Dean and Katlyn Chastine, described a chaotic scenario where several of their dogs had broken free and charged into the roadway, where they attacked the victim. In the midst of the pandemonium, Dean suffered injuries while attempting to restrain the aggressive dogs and protect the victim.

Desperate Measures Taken

In a bid to stop the attack, Chastine claimed she fired a gun into the air, hoping to scare the dogs away. However, the quick actions of the couple didn’t seem to prevent the attack from becoming increasingly violent. As deputies assessed the situation, they noticed blood on both Dean and Chastine, prompting them to call for backup from the nearby Ninety Six Police Department and the Humane Society to help with animal control.

Authorities Act Quickly

Upon investigation, authorities found a total of seven dogs housed in a pen at the property. Dean identified three dogs as the attackers, which were displaying aggressive behavior at the time. After a careful evaluation, these three dogs were euthanized with Dean’s consent to prevent any further danger. In the interest of safety, two additional dogs were taken to a local animal shelter for further observation, while two non-aggressive dogs were left secured at the property, pending a more thorough investigation.

Investigation Underway

As the investigation unfolds, swabs were taken from the mouths of the euthanized dogs for veterinary testing, and photographs of the dogs—as well as the victim’s clothing—were collected as evidence. The Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office has stressed the seriousness of the victim’s injuries and has stated that it remains uncertain if he will fully recover.

Legal Consequences for Dog Owners

Dean and Chastine now face misdemeanor charges under state laws regarding dangerous animals, including failing to control animals that cause injury to a person. Different agencies, such as the Ninety Six Police and the Humane Society, are collaborating with the Department of Public Health as they conduct their investigation and continue animal health assessments.

A Community in Shock

The entire community is holding its breath while waiting for updates on the victim’s condition. As many come to terms with this frightening incident, it serves as a stark reminder about the importance of responsible pet ownership and ensuring that animals are properly secured to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.

The investigation by the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office remains ongoing, and community members are urged to remain vigilant as authorities continue to piece together the details surrounding this alarming attack.
