GREENWOOD, S.C. — State and local government employees, as well as law enforcement officers, now have a convenient path to an affordable master’s degree. Lander University’s new online Master of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice has officially received approval from both the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Program Details and Curriculum

Designed specifically for working professionals within criminology and criminal justice fields, this new master’s program offers courses that delve into crucial areas such as crisis communication, crisis leadership, mental health and first responders, research methods, and theory and policy. Graduate students will complete six core courses along with four electives of their choosing, totaling 30 credit hours. The entire program is available online, structured for the flexibility needs of working adults, and can be completed in two years or less.

Addressing Real-World Challenges

“Students will learn about the legal and social problems they will face in the workforce, including addiction, domestic violence, and human trafficking,” said Dr. Lucas McMillan, dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. These comprehensive insights are intended to prepare graduates for enhanced leadership roles in their respective careers.

A Collaborative Effort

The curriculum was developed in strategic collaboration with law enforcement, government, and security-related organizations. This collaborative effort ensures that students gain knowledge tailored to the real-world requirements of criminology and criminal justice professionals.

“Lander University has a strong tradition of providing online education for working adults, and this new program is a fantastic addition to our online offerings,” Dr. Lloyd Willis, dean of the College of Graduate and Online Studies, commented. He also highlighted the indispensable input from the South Carolina law enforcement community in shaping the program.

This new master’s degree aims to serve members of the law enforcement community looking to advance their careers by acquiring specialized knowledge and skills necessary for increased leadership responsibilities.
