Greenwood: Celebrating Community Leaders and Empowering Parents
In the heart of Greenwood, some remarkable individuals are making waves in the community, and they’re doing it one step at a time. Among these stars is Siserly Kelley, a dedicated parent educator with the Carolina Health Centers, working tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of parents and young children.
This October has brought a mix of cloudy skies and a bit of rain with temperatures reaching a high of 63°F in the day and dropping to a low of 51°F at night. But the cool weather hasn’t dampened spirits in Greenwood, especially for those like Kelley who thrive on bringing warmth to the community.
Siserly Kelley: A True Champion for Parents
Recently named as a member of the 2024 Greenwood Under 40 Stars, Siserly Kelley has been recognized for her exceptional contribution as a community leader. This honor, presented by the local Chamber of Commerce, highlights her dedication as she continues to support parents and children through critical stages of development.
With a passion for fostering positive outcomes in early childhood education, Kelley is well-equipped with resources to assist families in need. She plays a pivotal role in promoting early literacy, partnering with the Greenwood County Public Library System and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to provide free books for children from birth.
A Journey Through Learning and Growth
On a recent crisp October day, Kelley was seen guiding toddler Chailen Adams and his mother, Shel’sea Williams, through a seasonal pumpkin patch at the St. Mark United Methodist Church. As they explored the vibrant patch, Kelley turned the visit into a playful learning session, encouraging Chailen to identify pumpkins by size and color while honing his counting skills.
“Seeing how kids like Chailen grow and learn over the years is incredibly rewarding,” shared Kelley with a smile. “It’s opportunities like these that allow them to thrive and develop crucial skills.”
A Humble Beginning Leading to Great Achievements
Siserly Kelley’s journey to becoming a celebrated community leader began with humble origins. Originally from Orangeburg and raised in Greenville, Kelley navigated through a career in retail before finding her calling in parent education. She transitioned from an administrative assistant role at Carolina Health Centers to becoming a pivotal parent educator.
“Everyone has a ‘why’ behind their choices, and understanding those is crucial,” Kelley shared, highlighting her empathetic approach to her work.
Alongside her work, Kelley is deeply engaged with personal commitments. She actively participates in her children’s parent-teacher associations and extends her commitment to maternal health with her certification as a birth doula. Her aspirations don’t end there; she also aims to become a lactation consultant, further empowering new mothers.
Cherishing Longtime Friendships and Building Community
In this recognition, Kelley is joined by her friend Helena Wardlaw, a fellow honoree and entrepreneur, with whom she shares a journey of over a decade since their college days.
“We were both completely surprised and honored to be named Under 40 Stars. Sharing this moment with Helena makes it even more special,” said Kelley, reflecting on their shared journey from college neighbors to recognized community leaders.
In Greenwood, people like Kelley remind us of the power of community, support, and relentless dedication to positive change. Despite October’s cloudy days, her efforts are a ray of hope for a brighter future.
