In the heart of our community, a memorable celebration unfolded at the Greenwood City Council meeting. It’s a bittersweet farewell to Judge Shameka Brown, who after 28 long years of distinguished service, is stepping into retirement. Her journey is inspirational; she began as a humble judge’s clerk in 1995 and ascended to become Greenwood’s very first female judge. Mayor Brandon Smith took the stage to officially present her with a proclamation in honor of her steadfast dedication and impact over nearly three decades.

City Council Updates: Projects and Proposals

After celebrating Judge Brown’s illustrious career, the City Council swiftly transitioned into handling city affairs with great enthusiasm. They hosted three public hearings, and although no community voices chimed in, the topics at hand saw unanimous approval.

The council greenlit the issuance of Greenwood Commission of Public Works (CPW) bond anticipation revenue notes for 2024. If CPW needs to borrow funds to secure gas, they have the green light. Although CPW has no current plans to float bonds next year, such preparedness ensures Greenwood remains future-ready. In addition, an important amendment to its business ordinance was unanimously passed. As City Manager Julie Wilkie reassured, the changes are revenue neutral, meaning the city’s business licenses income stream remains consistent. Strikingly, the new ordinance removes certain classifications such as “farmer,” “processor,” and “Peddler.”

Anticipating Community Growth: Rezoning Request

In other exciting developments, the Council enthusiastically approved a first reading on a rezoning request at 227 Marshall Road. The proposal is all about enhancing the neighborhood with plans to transform 31.59 acres from low-density single-family residential into a master plan residential zoning. This fresh plan is set to introduce 74 lots with added trails and a shared green space area for everyone to enjoy. It’s a promising rejuvenation that received 6-0 approval, with more discussions slated for next meeting – an event that invites public voices to share their thoughts enthusiastically.
