GREENWOOD, SC – Excitement was in the air as students returned to Piedmont Technical College (PTC) for the first day of fall classes. In a highly anticipated event, PTC President Dr. Hope E. Rivers introduced the name of the new college mascot: Blaze the Phoenix.
Standing next to the vibrant new mascot outside the Student Center, Dr. Rivers explained the significance of the name. “Blaze isn’t just a name; it’s a powerful symbol of action each of us can take as a Phoenix,” said Rivers. “Just as a single spark can ignite a roaring flame, each of you have the potential to light up your own path, to blaze a trail of success and contribute to the warmth and strength of our community,” she continued. “Blaze represents the spirit of renewal and transformation that defines the student journey.”
The introduction of Blaze the Phoenix comes after a significant outpouring of support from the college community for having a mascot. A survey conducted among faculty, staff, and students revealed that 90% of respondents supported the idea. The Phoenix, a symbol of inspiration and renewal, aligns with PTC’s commitment to academic excellence and its efforts to transform lives and strengthen communities.
The concept of the Phoenix mascot was first revealed to students during Spring Activities Day. Initial brainstorming led to the submission of 33 potential names by students, faculty, and staff. The PTC Mascot Committee then narrowed this list down to three finalists: Felix, Blaze, and Ash. Voting among the college community commenced in the spring to select the final name.
After the name was revealed, Blaze quickly became a beloved figure, with students posing for photos with the mascot in the Student Center. The atmosphere was festive, with phoenix-themed giveaways, free cupcakes, popcorn, and bottled water for everyone to enjoy.
Blaze is not just a mascot but a dynamic addition to the PTC community. As Dr. Rivers noted, Blaze will play a crucial role in enhancing school spirit and fostering a stronger sense of community. The visually striking mascot is expected to boost brand recognition and serve as a key element in marketing and recruitment efforts. Blaze’s embodiment of the college’s values is hoped to attract new students and enhance overall college appeal.
Piedmont Technical College is a comprehensive two-year college that provides hands-on training in the latest technologies and skill sets highly sought after by employers in the region. With its main campus in Greenwood and additional campuses in Abbeville, Edgefield, Laurens, McCormick, Newberry, and Saluda counties, PTC serves over 8,000 students annually.
As the academic year kicks off, the introduction of Blaze the Phoenix sets an inspiring tone for the future. The mascot’s symbolism of rebirth and transformation resonates deeply with the ethos of PTC, promising a vibrant and uplifting journey for all students.
