As students streamed back for the first day of fall classes, Piedmont Technical College (PTC) buzzed with excitement. PTC President Dr. Hope E. Rivers made an inspiring announcement, introducing the college’s new mascot: Blaze the Phoenix.
“Blaze isn’t just a name; it’s a powerful symbol of action,” Rivers said, standing beside the vibrant new mascot outside the Student Center. “Just as a single spark can ignite a roaring flame, each of you has the potential to light up your own path, to blaze a trail of success, and contribute to the warmth and the strength of our community.”
Rivers emphasized that Blaze represents the spirit of renewal and transformation intrinsic to the student journey. The decision to introduce a mascot was driven by overwhelming support from the college community. A survey revealed that 90% of respondents — comprising faculty, staff, and students — believed PTC should have a mascot.
The idea of a PTC Phoenix mascot first came to light during Spring Activities Day. The Phoenix, a symbol of inspiration and renewal, resonated with PTC’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence. It aligns with the college’s broader mission to transform lives and strengthen communities, enhancing the overall student experience.
“At that time, we asked for your feedback to find the perfect name for our new mascot,” Rivers reminded the crowd. The community responded enthusiastically, submitting 33 potential names. A committee narrowed these down to three finalists: Felix, Blaze, and Ash. Voting kicked off in spring, allowing the community to select the mascot’s name directly.
After the grand reveal of Blaze on Monday, students wasted no time in celebrating. Many posed for photos with the new mascot at the Student Center and enjoyed phoenix-themed giveaways, free cupcakes, popcorn, and bottled water.
Blaze is expected to bolster school spirit and foster a stronger sense of community. As a visually striking symbol, Blaze will enhance brand recognition and be a key element in marketing efforts. Embodying the college’s values, the Phoenix aims to attract new students and reinforce the college’s overall appeal.
While the arrival of Blaze marks a new chapter for PTC, the mascot is but a part of the institution’s larger vision. By symbolizing resilience, transformation, and renewal, Blaze signifies the dynamic spirit the institution instills in its students.
Looking at tonight’s weather, the forecast predicts that it will be mostly clear, with a low of 58°F. Winds will be northeast at 5 to 10 mph. It’s perfect weather to enjoy the initial excitement of the new school year and the company of Blaze the Phoenix.
The introduction of Blaze marks an uplifting way to start the academic year, captivating the hearts of students and faculty alike while embodying the core values of Piedmont Technical College.
