Greenwood, August 22, 2024 – A new chapter began for students and faculty at Piedmont Technical College (PTC) this Monday as they returned for the first day of fall classes. Adding to the excitement, PTC President Dr. Hope E. Rivers unveiled the name of the college’s new mascot: Blaze the Phoenix.
“Blaze isn’t just a name; it’s a powerful symbol of action each of us can take as a Phoenix,” said Rivers during a ceremony held outside the Student Center on the Greenwood campus. She added, “Just as a single spark can ignite a roaring flame, each of you has the potential to light up your own path, to blaze a trail of success, and contribute to the warmth and strength of our community.”
The decision to introduce a new mascot was met with overwhelming support from the college community. A survey conducted among faculty, staff, and students revealed that 90% of respondents believed PTC should have a mascot. The concept of the PTC Phoenix mascot was initially shared with students during Spring Activities Day, highlighting the importance of inspiration and renewal that aligns with the college’s commitment to academic excellence.
“At that time, we asked for your feedback to find the perfect name for our new mascot,” Rivers recalled Monday. Students, faculty, and staff submitted a total of 33 names for consideration. The PTC Mascot Committee then narrowed down the list to three finalists: Felix, Blaze, and Ash. Voting on these names began in the spring, giving the college community a direct role in selecting the mascot’s name.
Following the exciting reveal of the mascot’s name on Monday, students eagerly posed for photos with Blaze in the Student Center. The event was filled with phoenix-themed giveaways, free cupcakes, popcorn, and bottled water, all enhancing the overall festive atmosphere.
The introduction of Blaze the Phoenix not only aims to bolster school spirit but also serves to create a stronger sense of community. As a visually striking symbol, Blaze is expected to significantly boost brand recognition and play a crucial role in PTC’s marketing efforts moving forward. By embodying the college’s core values, Blaze is poised to attract new students and reinforce the overall appeal of the institution.
The weather also seemed to cooperate with the celebratory mood, offering abundant sunshine throughout the day. The high reached 82°F, while winds came from the ENE at 5 to 10 mph. As evening approached, clear skies prevailed, with temperatures dropping to a low of 56°F and winds becoming light and variable.
With this fresh new symbol of renewal, Piedmont Technical College stands ready to face the future with renewed vigor and an enhanced sense of unity. Blaze the Phoenix will undoubtedly become a central figure in the college’s ongoing journey toward academic and community excellence.
By the end of the day, it was clear that both students and faculty warmly embraced Blaze the Phoenix, making the unveiling a memorable start to the new academic year. The introduction of the new mascot signifies more than just a new emblem for the college; it stands as a testament to the spirit of transformation and hope that defines the PTC community.
