Greenwood City Bids Farewell to Beloved Councilwoman Betty Boles
Greenwood City is waking up to a relatively peaceful day today, starting off with some cloudy skies that are expected to give way to a mostly sunny afternoon. The temperatures are set to hover around a mild 56 degrees Fahrenheit, with a breeze coming in from the west at about 10 to 20 mph. As the day turns into night, folks can look forward to clear skies and a bit of a chill with temperatures dropping to a colder 23 degrees Fahrenheit, thanks to the NNE winds prevalent at 5 to 10 mph.
Amidst this pleasant December weather, the Greenwood community is buzzing with news from a recent city council meeting. Long-serving Councilwoman Betty Boles has announced she will not be seeking reelection in the upcoming November elections. After an admirable two-decade tenure on the Greenwood City Council, Boles is stepping down from her position. “It has been an honor to serve the city,” she expressed at the meeting, reflecting on the journey that has had its share of ups and downs.
Boles has been a significant presence on the council since she was first elected in 2003. Her journey began when she contested and won the seat vacated by Brooks Bryant after his relocation from Ward 3. “When I first came on council, I have to be honest, I was green,” Boles candidly shared, reminiscing how she grew into the role, guided by experience and learning. One of her crucial early steps included a consultative meeting with then-City Manager Steve Brown, which helped her understand the city’s inner workings, further motivating her to run for office. Boles emphasized understanding and compassion for the people of Greenwood as vital to serving them effectively.
The city has transformed remarkably under her watch, witnessing significant projects like the revitalization of Maxwell Avenue and major streetscaping initiatives in Uptown. These efforts have been pivotal in maintaining and developing Greenwood’s charm and functionality. Throughout her term, Boles also served on the board of commissioners, a role in which she focused on advancing services for the low-income community, constantly striving to ensure quality and accessible resources for all residents.
Though she steps back from council duties, Boles plans to continue contributing to the community in her capacity as a member of the GLEAMNS board, provided she retains her position. “My motto was if I can help someone along the way, my work has not been in vain,” she earnestly stated, carrying her spirit of service forward. Expressing gratitude, Boles thanked the city staff, her supporters, and those who kept her in their prayers throughout her journey in public service.
Her farewell does not merely mark the end of an era but also leaves a legacy of selfless dedication and perseverance, inspiring many within the community. Greenwood City Council will now move forward to welcome a new representative, who will undoubtedly have big shoes to fill in Ward Three.
As residents of Greenwood reflect on the news, they can anticipate some brisk, sunny weather and cherished memories of Boles’ enduring impact on the city’s landscape. Here’s to hoping the community experiences a smooth transition while holding dear the goodwill and hard work Betty Boles has done for Greenwood’s vibrant city.
