In a stunning display of athletic talent and determination, the girls basketball team from Berkeley High School has accomplished what no other team in the school’s history has achieved—they clinched their very first state championship! The monumental game took place on March 8, 2025, at the Florence Center, where they faced off against the formidable Greenwood team.
The atmosphere was electric as the Lady Stags triumphed with a final score of 60-54. The game kept fans on the edge of their seats, especially during the nail-biting moments leading up to the final buzzer. Berkeley ended their remarkable season with an impressive record of 24-4, highlighted by a thrilling 12-game winning streak that spoke to their grit and tenacity.
Coach Crystal Peace, who has dedicated her coaching career to building this team since the 2010-11 season, expressed immense pride in her players. The significance of this victory is monumental, marking a new chapter not just for the team but for the school itself, as this is the first championship for any girls’ sport in Berkeley’s history. It joins the ranks of football and baseball titles from other seasons, boosting school pride to new heights.
The game took an exhilarating turn in the last minutes, as the Lady Stags executed a phenomenal comeback. After trailing with a score of 52-50 against Greenwood, kids in the stands held their breath as Berkeley managed to outscore their opponents 10-2 in those critical final moments. What a show of resilience!
Key players from Berkeley stole the spotlight during this historic match. Madison Thomas and Amani McCray each netted 15 points, proving to be a formidable threat on offense. Alaina Carter also played a crucial role, chipping in with 13 points and electrifying the crowd with her impressive shooting, including hitting three 3-pointers. Together, Thomas and Carter combined for an impressive 6-for-10 effort from beyond the arc!
McCray didn’t just shine on offense; she also led the team in rebounds, securing 10 to give Berkeley extra possession opportunities. Other players added valuable contributions as well. Aiyanna Moses scored 7 points, while Demi Gray put in 6, rounding out a balanced and effective scoring effort for the team.
Despite the loss, Greenwood also had their standout moments, finishing their season with a record of 18-10. Their leading scorer in the championship match, Danielle Oliver, put up a valiant effort with 22 points, but it just wasn’t enough to outlast the momentum of the Lady Stags.
