Abbeville County has appointed Tommy Brian Moon as its new director after David Garner’s resignation. Moon brings extensive public service experience, currently working as a nurse and assistant chief in emergency services. The county council unanimously supported his appointment, which follows a thorough selection process involving four candidates. As Moon steps into his new role, citizens are eager to see the positive changes he will implement in the county leadership.
Abbeville County has officially welcomed its new director, Tommy Brian Moon, following the recent resignation of David Garner. Garner decided to take on a new journey as an assistant manager in York County, leaving behind a legacy that began in mid-2017.
Tommy Brian Moon comes to the role with a wealth of experience that is sure to benefit the county. Currently, he is a dedicated nurse and critical care technician, lending his skills to the Greenville County Public Safety team. Additionally, he serves as the assistant chief with the Anderson County Fire Protection Commission. With such a strong background in public service, Moon is poised to effectively oversee the day-to-day operations of Abbeville County government.
The county council made the decision to offer the director’s position without initially naming the candidate. This decision was made with a unanimous vote of 6-0, showcasing the council’s confidence in the choice. One interesting detail is that, to respect his current employer, Moon requested his name not be revealed until he had a chance to inform them personally.
Prior to Moon’s appointment, the council took its time to find the right fit during a rigorous selection process. Four candidates were interviewed during a meeting held on November 20, 2024. Ultimately, three of those candidates were publicly identified when records were released as part of a Freedom of Information request. Alongside Moon, the other candidates included Robert Delgado, the city administrator in Laurens and a proud Abbeville resident, as well as Joshua Taylor, who works as the emergency operations manager with Savannah River Nuclear Solutions.
Interestingly, the council did not disclose all details about the fourth candidate, a breach of South Carolina’s FOI law that sometimes leaves voters curious about the selection process. Nonetheless, the excitement surrounding Moon’s appointment is palpable throughout the county.
Reflecting on the evolution of leadership in Abbeville County, David Garner’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter, as he succeeded David Porter, who took on the role after Bruce Cooley’s resignation in December 2014. Each of these leaders brought their unique styles to the director position, guiding the county through various challenges and successes.
In addition to appointing the new director, the county council held a swearing-in ceremony for new members this week. Trent Taylor was officially sworn in for his first term on the Abbeville County Council, taking over Rick Campbell’s previous seat. In a related move, Billy Norris was elected as the new chairman of the council, with former chairman Bryan McClain stepping into the role of vice chairman. Moreover, Charles Goodwin and James McCord will serve new four-year terms, ensuring a mix of old and new perspectives in county governance.
As the new director of Abbeville County, Tommy Brian Moon faces the exciting challenge of acting as the chief administrative officer. His role will involve overseeing daily operations and coordinating activities to benefit the community. There’s a sense of eagerness in the air as residents look forward to the changes and updates that his tenure will bring.
With a new director and fresh faces in council leadership, Abbeville County is gearing up for a promising future. Residents might want to stay tuned for upcoming announcements and initiatives from their local government that aim to improve services and enhance the quality of life in this vibrant community.
