Sunny Skies and Community Developments Mark Busy Day for Greenwood City Council

Major Rezoning Developments Approved

It was a productive Monday for our city council, particularly regarding some substantial development plans. During the recent meeting, the council approved the amendment of the Greenwood Zoning Map, paving the way for changes at the intersection of Marshall Road and Bypass 25 SE. These 147 acres will now transition into a Planned Development District, featuring a mix of single-family residential homes, townhomes, and commercial spaces.

The development plan includes intriguing amenities like pickleball courts, walking trails, and even a dog park. However, not everyone is on board. Resident Stacy Hart voiced her concerns during the public hearing, questioning the impact on commercial opportunities and available land for businesses. Despite her objections, the council voted 5-2 in favor of the ordinance, with Matthew Miller expressing strong support for the plan. Meanwhile, members Niki Hutto and Robert Dean were not convinced, citing concerns about infrastructure adequacy.

Kitson Mill Project Earns Unanimous Approval

Following the discussion on the Marshall Road project, the city council gave a unanimous green light (7-0) for another exciting venture—the Kitson Mill Project. This significant step forward will convert approximately 22 acres currently designated as warehousing and industrial into another Planned Development District.

This project promises a blend of commercial and multi-family residential units, ultimately totaling 400 residences and 88,000 square feet of potential commercial space. Mayor Brandon Smith shared his excitement, noting the long-term efforts that have gone into bringing this project to fruition. All existing brick warehouse and mill buildings will be preserved and repurposed, adding historical charm to this new development.

Funding Approval for Community Events

In financial news, the city council also approved the allocation of accommodations and hospitality tax funds for the 2024-25 year. Over $160,000 in funds will support organizations such as the Connie Maxwell, Greenwood Community Theatre, and The Museum and the Railroad Historical Center. This financial backing aims to bolster community events and draw visitors to our charming town.

New Faces and Future Projects

In addition to zoning and funding matters, the day featured introductions of new personnel. The police and fire departments welcomed new officers and a returning staff member, while the public works department filled key positions in horticulture, grounds, and maintenance.

Lastly, Mayor Brandon Smith announced the upcoming renovations on Waller Avenue, set to commence on November 11th. He also hinted at future discussions on a new solid waste ordinance at the next city council meeting, showing that our community is always moving forward, brightening our sunny city with ongoing improvements.
