Technological Upgrade for Lander University’s Jeff May Complex Entrance Sign

Greenwood, South Carolina

The entrance sign at Lander University’s Jeff May Complex is getting a major upgrade. This new development is set to enhance the university’s ability to showcase messages and graphics in more dynamic styles. Brian Reese, the university’s athletic director, shared that the updated sign would offer a broad range of messaging options.

The previous signage, in place for over a decade, featured screens with one-dimensional bulb display panels. These older screens could only show basic text and graphics. Megan Varner, assistant vice president of university relations and publications, explained that the new sign will incorporate “industry-standard technology and bigger, video-capable panels that allow for dynamic, full-color graphics.” According to Varner, the old panels exhibited significant wear, and finding replacement parts had become increasingly challenging.

Joe Greenthal, vice president for finance and administration, highlighted the importance of the sign upgrade. “The entrance to the facility represents a major gateway to the University, and the complex is one of our most important assets for recruitment when prospective students and families visit,” he said. He also noted that an average of “over 20,000 vehicles pass it daily.”

The project was managed through the State’s procurement process, with Electric City Signs, Inc., out of Anderson, SC, winning the contract. Stan McManus, the Greenwood sales representative for Electric City Signs, Inc., worked closely with Lander University on the new design. Manufacturing of the signs took place at their Anderson facility. The casing for the sign had to be adjusted to fit the new panels, which are about two feet taller.

Greenthal expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “We are excited for everyone to see this entrance reimagined.” He believes the new sign will “enhance the visibility of Lander University and Lander Athletics,” while also providing excellent opportunities to advertise local businesses and promote community events.

Construction on the new sign is set to be completed by next week, marking a new chapter for the Jeff May Complex’s entrance.
