South Carolina Arts Alliance Board Gathers in Greenwood for Annual Retreat

Greenwood, SC

The South Carolina Arts Alliance (SCAA) Board of Directors is set to hold its annual retreat at the Arts Center of Greenwood on August 23-24. This retreat is not just any meeting but marks the first business gathering of the fiscal year for the Board. Adding to the significance, this retreat includes a much-anticipated day of strategic planning.

In addition to their business agenda, the Board of Directors has arranged a tour of local arts and cultural assets in Greenwood, thanks to Discover Greenwood. This exploration is seen as an opportunity for the Board members to engage with the community and appreciate the local investments in arts and culture. To underscore the event’s importance, there will be a small reception on Friday evening, welcoming local leaders and the newest five members who joined the Board on July 1st.

“As one of South Carolina’s twelve Cultural Districts, Greenwood is a wonderful example of how investing in the arts and local history enriches economies and overall quality of life throughout the state,” says SCAA President Dana Gencarelli. “We’re very honored to have been invited to hold our annual retreat at the Arts Center of Greenwood and look forward to experiencing everything the community has to offer.”

Founded in 1979, the South Carolina Arts Alliance is the only statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to advocacy, leadership development, and public awareness for the arts. Board members represent various communities from across the state. The Arts Center of Greenwood, represented by Executive Director Sylvia Martin since 2022, has been an active member of the Alliance.

The Alliance’s recent activities have focused on several critical initiatives. They have been advocating for increased state funding to support arts organizations and arts education. They have also conducted a range of workshops and training sessions aimed at empowering local artists, educators, and advocates. Their commitment to fostering a supportive arts community was evident earlier this year when they gathered over 350 arts leaders, artists, educators, students, and other advocates at the State House for the annual SC Arts Day in February.

The retreat in Greenwood represents an essential milestone for the SCAA. It reflects the Board’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the arts sector in South Carolina through community engagement and strategic initiatives. It also showcases Greenwood as a model of cultural investment and community enrichment.

Greenwood offers more than the retreat itself. The town is bustling with activities, including the Greenwood Chess Club’s Thursday Chess Day, when chess enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels gather for an evening of free, fun, and family-friendly chess games. Events like these highlight Greenwood’s vibrant community spirit and engagement in arts and culture.

Other notable community events include presentations by Master Gardeners, social gatherings, and various cultural activities that attract residents and visitors alike. For instance, the local Master Gardener Volunteer Training Course provides comprehensive training to garden enthusiasts, promoting environmental stewardship and community involvement.

In summary, the South Carolina Arts Alliance’s retreat in Greenwood is more than just a meeting; it is a celebration of community, culture, and the arts. It underscores the importance of investing in local arts to enrich the economy and improve quality of life. As the Board engages with Greenwood’s cultural assets, they not only strategize for the future but also appreciate the rich heritage and community spirit that define this Cultural District.
