Exciting Proposal at Lander University Women’s Basketball Game

Greenwood, SC – A festive atmosphere filled with excitement echoed through the gymnasium at Lander University on Saturday, December 7, 2024. The women’s basketball game took an unforgettable turn when Dalton Hawkins proposed to his girlfriend, Karlie Dean, in a surprise moment that captured the hearts of attendees.

Who, What, When, Where, and Why

The couple, who met in kindergarten, turned a typical Saturday game into a cherished memory. Dalton, orchestrating the proposal, dressed as Lander’s popular mascot, Mr. Bearcat, to pop the question during a timeout performance by the Spirit Team’s Sassy Cat dancers. As the crowd cheered, the moment unfolded on the court, transforming the event into a personal celebration.

The proposal took place during the first timeout of the game, where Karlie was performing with her dance team. Unbeknownst to her, Dalton was waiting in costume at center court, ready to reveal himself and propose. The performance, set to the iconic song “Chapel of Love,” was a perfect backdrop to the surprise.

A Surprise to Remember

As the Sassy Cats finished their routine, Mrs. Bearcat, another university mascot, guided Karlie to the center of the court, creating an air of mystery. Once there, Karlie was met with the stunning sight of Dalton on one knee, his Bearcat costume head removed. Within moments, he asked a life-changing question and slipped a ring onto her finger.

The arena erupted with joy, as family, friends, and even the players from the opposing USC Aiken team joined in the celebration, raising their arms and cheering for the couple. Karlie’s enthusiastic “yes” echoed through the gym, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.

A Journey Filled with Love

Dalton and Karlie’s relationship has deep roots, tracing back to their childhood. They became best friends in kindergarten at Ware Shoals Primary School, where their playful personalities frequently drew attention in the classroom. However, as young children sometimes do, life took them down different paths when Dalton’s family moved away during third grade and Karlie’s family later relocated as well.

Years apart did not dampen their connection. Their story took a beautiful turn when they reconnected at a mutual friend’s birthday party during Karlie’s senior year of high school at Greenwood Christian School. That reunion reignited the bond that had begun in their early days, leading to a relationship that blossomed over time.

Supported by the Community

This heartfelt proposal was made possible with the support of Lander’s Spirit Team Coach Kim Schoolfield, who helped coordinate the surprise. It promises to be a standout moment in the couple’s love story, becoming part of the university’s community tradition.

As the holiday season approaches, this magical proposal adds a special touch of romance, leaving all in attendance inspired by the power of love and connection. Dalton and Karlie look forward to their future together, a journey that began in childhood and continues to evolve into a beautiful union.
