Greenville Welcomes Plentiful Sunshine and Local Teacher’s Bright Future
The skies over Greenville are promising lots of sunshine today, with temperatures reaching a delightful high of 52°F. Though the breeze is light and just variable enough to keep things interesting, it’s certainly a lovely day to be out and about. As the day winds down, expect mainly clear skies and a chilly low around 30°F. It’s a classic cool day in December, cozy enough to settle in with a warm drink this evening.
A Shining Star in Education
Amidst this sunny backdrop of Greenville, a local teacher is experiencing her own brilliant moment in the spotlight. Anna Boyd, who passionately teaches sixth and eighth graders at Brewer Middle School within District 50, has achieved a remarkable feat. She has been selected as one of only 12 teachers nationwide to become part of the esteemed Scholastic Teacher Fellows Cohort for the 2024-25 academic year.
An Advocate for Diverse Learning
Anna, originally hailing from Monroeville, Alabama, a place known as the “Literary Capital of the World,” has carried a deep-seated love for English throughout her career. Her path in education was shaped through early inspiration by her Aunt Ruth, a devoted teacher, and the impressive storytelling of her Alabama history teacher, Mrs. Kay English. This foundation led her to pursue an English degree at Huntingdon College and kickstart a teaching career that relocated her from Alabama to Clinton, and eventually to Brewer Middle School in Greenville.
Her dedication and innovation in teaching are precisely what made her stand out to Scholastic. For her, it’s all about representing her students’ lives and integrating their unique experiences into the curriculum. Anna Boyd is celebrated for her relentless efforts to develop school and district-level curriculums, especially for students who are multilingual learners.
Shaping the Future of Educational Resources
With Tara Welty, a senior vice president at Scholastic, praising her commitment, Anna Boyd’s inclusion in this exclusive group marks an exciting opportunity. As part of the Scholastic Teacher Fellows Cohort, she’ll collaborate with product development, research, and marketing teams at Scholastic Education Solutions. Her role is crucial in ensuring that educational resources are vibrant and engaging, equitably stocked in classrooms with books that will capture and maintain student interest.
Boyd is particularly thrilled about contributing her current in-field experiences to inform new educational strategies and resources. Her innovative capstone project aims to create a website that offers parental insight into the books their children are exploring in the classroom, striving for transparency in educational content.
A Meaningful Support System for Students
With this fellowship, Anna Boyd receives a $2,000 stipend alongside $500 in Scholastic products. Her plans include expanding her classroom library, a move that not only supports her students in their educational endeavors but also allows her to extend her goodwill efforts during the holidays. Anna notes, “Having this support enables me to further provide for my students both at school and at home.”
This blend of sunny skies and educational achievements sets a hopeful, positive tone in Greenville. As part of this Scholastic initiative, Anna Boyd embodies the spirit of continuous learning and advocacy for a diverse and inclusive classroom, driving change one lesson plan at a time.
