Greenwood High School JROTC Shines Bright with Stellar Achievements
In Greenwood, the local Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) at Greenwood High School is making waves and capturing the community’s attention with a series of remarkable achievements. Under the inspiring motto of being “Uncomfortable with Average”, the program has been pushing boundaries and setting new standards in various competitions throughout the past month.
Veterans Day Parade: A New Chapter
The month of November unfolded with promises of great achievements as the Greenwood High JROTC kicked off its feats by participating in the Veterans Day parade on November 3. In one of their largest turnouts in recent years, the cadets left an indelible mark by introducing a new element to their parade. For the first time, each cadet marched carrying parade rifles, adding an air of professionalism and dedication that resonated with onlookers and the cadets themselves alike. This fresh approach wasn’t just a visual treat; it represented a commitment to excellence that defines the program.
Academic and Leadership Triumph
The following weeks saw the Greenwood High JROTC’s Academic and Leadership Team embarking on their Level I testing. Conducted on November 12 and 13, both teams reached a program high, achieving an impressive 85% score. This remarkable attainment sets the stage for potential advancement to Level II in February of the current academic year. If they succeed, these talented teams will proceed to the National Competition, slated for June in Washington D.C. With their fierce dedication, Greenwood High has secured a place at this prestigious level eight out of the past nine years, a testament to their consistent excellence.
Rifle Team in Focus
Not resting on their laurels, the Rifle team, made up of Cadets Jacob Hansen, Drake Liverman, Addison Price, and Ruth Able, showcased precision and skill at the Nations Ford High School competition in Fort Mill, SC, on November 14. They delivered a stellar performance, scoring an 1890, which qualifies them for the Best of Brigade Competition, scheduled at Blythewood High School from December 4-8. This score stands as the highest achieved by the school in this discipline, reaffirming the team’s dedication and focus.
RAIDER Teams Compete at Liberty High
Concluding the month’s victories, on November 16, the RAIDER Teams went head-to-head at Liberty High School in the gripping “Red Devil Raider Competition”. This was no ordinary competition; it tested strength, unity, and endurance through events like a 5K run, an obstacle course, a weighted litter carry of 1,600 meters, a HUMVEE pull, and a rope bridge construction. These demanding challenges, culminating in an individual Ironman/Ironwoman competition, highlighted the teams’ cooperative spirit and fighting resolve.
The Greenwood teams emerged triumphant, securing second place overall out of ten competing schools. Their success here is just a preview of what’s to come as they advance to face new challenges at the Best of Brigade competition on December 14.
The community’s pride in Greenwood High’s JROTC program is evident, as each achievement reflects the unwavering commitment of its cadets towards excellence and teamwork. With such a commendable series of successes, Greenwood High School’s JROTC program continues to embody the ethos of striving beyond being just “average.”
