Sunny Skies and Future Plans in Greenwood County
Greetings from beautiful Greenwood County! Today started off with a bit of a tease from some morning clouds. But don’t worry, the sun is coming out to play this afternoon. We’re expecting generally sunny skies with the temperature peaking around a pleasant 65°F. You might want to grab a light jacket if you plan to enjoy the clear evening skies, as temperatures will dip to a cool 40°F.
County Council Certifies CPST Referendum
In addition to enjoying the weather, there’s some important local news that folks around here have been buzzing about. The Greenwood County Council came together at Park Plaza to conduct some official business that affects us all. Council members including Theo Lane, Dayne Pruitt, Mark Allison, Teresa Griffin, Robbie Templeton, Johanna Bishop, and Chairman Chuck Moates (joining over the phone), were on hand, alongside key county officials like County Manager Toby Chappell and Treasurer Steffanie Dorn.
The big item on the agenda was the certification of the 2024 Capital Project Sales Tax (CPST) referendum. This referendum was held on November 5th, and it saw Greenwood County voters deciding on whether to approve a new capital project sales tax. Out of the total 28,746 votes cast, 18,354 people voted in favor, while 10,392 were against. It’s clear that there was strong support for this initiative, which will replace the existing tax starting May 1, 2025, immediately after the 2016 version ends on April 30, 2025.
What This Means for Greenwood County
The CPST is basically a special sales tax that is aimed at funding significant capital improvement projects within the county. This could mean new infrastructure, such as roads and public buildings, and other critical projects that are poised to benefit the community’s standard of living.
With the 2024 CPST all set to kick in next year, there is an air of anticipation and optimism among residents. Not only does this tax bring about much-needed development, but it also highlights the community’s active participation in shaping the county’s future through democratic means.
